Your guide to finding images at the University of Idaho and beyond.

When to Use Non-UI Image Sources

The University of Idaho Library subscibes to several proprietary databases that provide full-image access to millions of images from art collections around the world. These images are advantageous in that they have been indexed with standard metadata, are of extremely high resolution, are approved by curators at their home institution, and are generally licensed for "fair use".

However, sometimes users may wish to distribute, alter, or otherwise use an image in ways that are not compatible with the tenets of "fair use". In these cases, users may wish to find images on the open web. These images may be copyrighted through a variety of licenses, ranging from those images available in the public domain to images managed through Creative Commons Licenses. Responsibility for the ethical use and attribution of these images falls solely on the user; there is often no mediation through authority control such as an art institution or library.

For further information, please refer to the Copyright Information found on the University of Idaho Library website, the information listed on the Copyright Information page of this guide, or consult with the University's Office of General Counsel at 208.885.6125.
