Student Employment in the Library

The University of Idaho Libraries employs many student workers across a variety of positions and responsibilities. Our student workers are ambassadors for the library, and are dependable, collaborative, and responsible. Benefits of working at the Library include a flexible schedule, interesting job assignments, and a positive and supportive working environment.

Hiring

The University of Idaho Libraries employs student workers, classified staff, and faculty. To be eligible to apply for a student worker position, students must be enrolled in a degree program, meet enrollment requirements, and have an active Vandal ID. 

Applying

To apply to work at the UI Libraries, visit the University's Jobs page and limit your results to Division/College = General Library and Position Type = Student/Temporary. Work-study appointments are also listed in Handshake

When you apply, you'll need to fill out the online information form and any additional documentation. When hired, you will also need to visit Human Resources (next to Taco Time on 6th Street) and fill out an I-9 and have a background check run (if the position requires it). Work Study

All of our jobs are Work Study eligible and may give preference to applicants with a Work Study award. All students are encouraged to apply. If you receive financial aid and have questions about Work Study, contact Work Study Administration.

International, DACA, and Undocumented Students

The University of Idaho Libraries are committed to the success of international, DACA, and undocumented students. We welcome employment applications from students with an F1 or J1 visa, or DACA or other work authorization. International students without a Social Security card will receive information about getting a card at the time of hire.

Work Schedules

Work Schedules 

  1. Know your work schedule, you are responsible for each shift you are assigned.   
  2. You are expected to be ready to work at your job on time as scheduled.  
  3. If you are sick or unable to make a shift, it is your responsibility to notify your supervisor as soon as possible; failure to show up for a shift without appropriate notification will result in a warning, and the second infraction will result in termination  
  4. You are expected to work the entire duration of your shift, except in case of emergency; leaving work before the end of your shift without the permission of your supervisor will result in termination. 
  5. You are entitled to a paid 15 minute break every 4-hour shift. If you are working an 8-hour shift, you are also entitled to an unpaid 30-minute break. Be sure to talk to your supervisor about when to take your breaks to ensure continuity of service for patrons. 
  6. Log your time in VandalWeb. 

Payroll and Timesheets

Payroll

  1. It is your responsibility to correctly and accurately enter your time for each shift worked 
  2. It is your responsibility to submit your timesheet, on time, to your supervisor at the end of each pay period
  3. Failure to submit your timesheet on time will result in a verbal warning, followed by dismissal on the second occurrence within the same semester. 
  4. Failure to input your timesheet on time, three total times, over the course of your employment at the Library, will result in your dismissal.

  1. Your timesheet can be found under the Employee tab on VandalWeb.
  2. Issues with entering your time should be directed to your supervisor or Human Resources.
